Check your work schedule and upcoming personal commitments.
Anticipate bruising or swelling and the possibility that people may notice you have had a treatment.
Be aware that in some cases, recovery time can be longer than expected.
Consider that wrinkle treatments may take 2 weeks to reach full effect.
Avoid over the counter medications or health supplements that may cause blood thinning:
If you are prescribed medication by your doctor that causes blood thinning, advise your treating practitioner but DO NOT stop taking your medication.
Avoid alcohol as this also has a blood thinning effect and can exacerbate bruising and swelling, resulting in a slower recovery.
Be sure to eat a meal and drink plenty of water prior to having a treatment. Please inform your practitioner if you have ever fainted.
If you wish to exercise on the day, please ensure this is at least 3 hours before your appointment. This is to allow enough time for your blood pressure and heart rate to recover, helping to reduce the likelihood of significant bruising and swelling.
Ask lots of questions during your consultation and make sure you are happy with all the answers provided. Let your practitioner know if anything is unclear.
Prepare several small cold packs to use following your treatment. These can help reduce swelling, bruising and discomfort.
Simple analgesia such as paracetamol is generally all that is needed for pain and tenderness. Try to avoid using ibuprofen (nurofen) as it can cause more bruising. Non-drowsy antihistamines may help reduce swelling. Do not take any medication if you have a known allergy.
These are recommended for patients who experience regular cold sores. Your practitioner can recommend suitable medication that does not require a prescription.
If your preference is to stay at home for a few days following a treatment so you can recover quietly, make sure you are well stocked with everything you need so as to avoid extra trips to the shops.
Avoid touching the treated area for several hours afterwards to avoid infection. If you do need to touch your face or the treated area, wash your hands first and be gentle.
Redness, swelling, bruising and discomfort are all normal side effects of aesthetic treatments, and generally resolve spontaneously after several days. Contact Respectable Aesthetics if you have any concerns about your recovery.
Cold packs are the most effective treatment for these side effects. Apply cold packs for 10 mins every half hour, for the first few hours and consider reapplying in the days that follow if swelling and tenderness persist.
Paracetamol can be considered for ongoing discomfort which is not relieved by a cold pack. Non drowsy antihistamines may assist in reducing swelling. Do not take any medication if you have a known allergy.
Swelling and bruising can make the treated area appear uneven. Do not be concerned as this generally settles once the side effects have resolved. Bruise creams can be sourced from a pharmacy and may slightly reduce the duration of a bruise.
Massage is often not required but may be recommended by your practitioner depending on the treatment. It is normal to feel firmness and sometimes bumps under the area that has been treated with dermal fillers, however this will subside over several weeks as the filler integrates with the tissues. Massage should only be considered if a bump is visible and preferably once tenderness and surrounding swelling has resolved.
The exception to this is the collagen stimulator treatment. A specific massage protocol is required afterwards, which is 5 mins, 5 times a day for 5 days (5/5/5). This is only for patients who have received the collagen stimulator treatment. Your practitioner will demonstrate how to do this effectively.
Avoid applying firm pressure for several days, unless you have been advised to massage.
Avoid heat, sun exposure, sun beds, spas, saunas and exercise for 48 hours following treatment. These things will increase bruising and swelling and slow your recovery.
Avoid smoking and vaping for 48 hours following treatments. These activities reduce oxygen rich blood from circulating. This impairs wound healing and can increase the risk of infection.
Avoid wearing makeup and skin products (other than gentle cleansers and un-fragranced moisturisers) for 24 hours. Many skincare products are capable of causing irritation on broken skin.
Avoid laser, facials and other beauty treatments, such as micro-dermabrasion and skin needling for 1 – 2 weeks following an aesthetic treatment.
If you have any concerns following a treatment including significant pain, unusual bruising, skin discoloration or blistering, please contact the team at Respectable Aesthetics for advice.
Follow up messages are sent to patients 2 weeks following treatment. Complimentary clinical reviews are also available but not essential if you are happy with your results. We will arrange a clinical review automatically when we believe we need to assess the outcome of your treatment. If we have not arranged a review and you would like one for any reason, let us know, and we will be more than happy to schedule one.
